The Homecoming
Grace Sullivan hadn't set foot in Millbrook Falls in ten years, but driving down Main Street felt like stepping back in time. The same Victorian houses lined the tree-shaded streets, the same bell tower chimed the hour from the town square, and the same sense of everyone knowing everyone else's business settled over her like a familiar blanket—one she'd spent a decade trying to escape.
She was only back for her grandmother's funeral, planning to sell the inherited bookstore and return to her anonymous life in Chicago. What she hadn't planned on was running into Jake Morrison at the grocery store, looking impossibly handsome in his sheriff's uniform and wearing the same crooked smile that had broken her teenage heart.
"Grace Sullivan," he said, his voice warm with surprise and something else she couldn't quite identify. "I heard you were back in town."
"News travels fast," Grace replied, trying to ignore the way her pulse quickened at the sight of him. "I suppose everyone knows why I'm here."
"Small town," Jake said with a shrug. "But also, people care about you. Your grandmother talked about you all the time—how proud she was of your success in the city."
Grace felt her throat tighten. "I should have visited more."
"She understood," Jake said gently. "She knew you needed to find your own way. But she always hoped you'd find your way back home eventually."
As Grace looked into his kind brown eyes, she wondered if coming home might be more complicated than she'd anticipated.
The Intimacy of Shared History
Over the following days, as Grace sorted through her grandmother's belongings and prepared the bookstore for sale, she was reminded of both the benefits and challenges of small town life. Everyone she encountered had a memory to share—about her grandmother, about Grace herself, about the girl she'd been before she left for college and never looked back.
